How does the dinner table unite us?

To promote Amazon’s “Transparent,” we looked at one of the visuals that is constantly repeated throughout the show: The family around the dinner table. In those moments, we saw a unity, openness and realism that was palpable. It made us realize that if we want to hammer home what it is to be a family, we could look at two different ones and see striking similarities. Simply put, there’s something about a family dinner that transcends the food on the table. Family dinner is a gathering time where we find ourselves not only closest to the ones we hold dear, but closest to our truest selves. We’re surrounded by those who should understand us best, and whether they do or not, we share things that would be shared nowhere else.
